Helen Louise Higgins 91 of Lamar passed away May 14, 2016 at Truman Healthcare after a short illness. Helen was born September 25, 1924 in Rudd, IA to Arista Barker and Lusia Moeller Barker. She married Oren "Jody" Higgins Sept. 1, 1950. She and Jody owned and operated and lived at the grocery store in Newport. Later they made their home on F Hwy near Newport around 1956. He preceded her in death March 6, 2007. Helen was employed as a Dr's assistant at the Lamar Clinic, as a secretary at Meeker Leather Products and MSSU in Joplin, she also was a State Park tour guide at Truman Birthplace and a voting clerk for Newport Township. She is survived by one son Anthony "Tony" Higgins of Littleton, CO, grandchildren Amy Schultz from Germany and Peter Higgins from Detroit, Michigan, one great grandchild, sister-in-laws Lorene Higgins, Betty Barker, Nellie Mae Higgins, Mary Ann Higgins and June Miles, many nieces and nephews and extended family caregivers Alvin and Emma Yoder. Her brother Royal and sisters Gladys and Dorothy preceded Helen in death. Visitation will be Wednesday May 18, 2016 at 1:00pm and service at 2:00 pm Konantz Warden Funeral Home burial will follow at Newport Cemetery.
