Edward Savage

Miles “Edward” Savage, age 101, formerly of Liberal, MO passed away Monday November 27 at the Webb City Health and Rehab Center. Edward was born September 4, 1916, in Neosho, MO, to Miles Francis and Norma Olive Carnes Savage. He graduated from the Neosho High School with the class of 1934. He served in the U. S. Naval Reserve from 1941 to 1945, and spent nearly three years at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the remainder of his military service at Patuxent River, MD. He married Theda Charlene Logan on April 23, 1944 in Lamar, MO. He worked for the Neosho Daily Democrat from 1935 until 1948, with time out for military service, and then for The Joplin Globe from 1948 to 1963. He was a Linotype operator for both papers. In 1963 he became a rural mail carrier out of the Liberal post office and later took on the route for Bronaugh as well, retiring from the post office September 4, 1981. Edward was also co-owner of The Liberal News in Liberal , MO, from 1955 to 1975. He was an assistant Boy Scout leader, a member of the American Legion at Liberal and the Liberal United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 73 years; 2 daughters, Romney Savage Baker of Lamar and Wendy Savage Peterson of Liberal; five grandchildren; Russ Savage, Coconut Creek, FL, Gina Peterson Williams, Frontenac, KS, Michelle Savage Fairbanks, Houston, TX, Keira Shipley Welter, Baldwin City, KS, and Jared Peterson of Pittsburg, KS; 11 great grandchildren; Kyrsha Welter, Mariah Williams, Salyn Welter, Logan French, Madison Williams, Addison Welter, Ian French, Ben Savage, Lily Peterson, Adam Savage and Jack Peterson; one great great granddaughter, Ariyah Fondren; one grand nephew Jonathan Savage. He was predeceased by a son, James Michael Savage, his parents; one brother, Charles Savage, a sister-in-law, Grace Firestone Savage and a nephew, William Savage. A graveside service will be held at the Liberal City Cemetery Thursday at 11 A.M.The Konantz Warden Funeral Home is providing services. Memorial donations are requested to be given to the Liberal City Park where Edward provided many days of volunteer work.
