Life Long Barton County resident, Leonard J. McCoy, 81, went on to be with the Lord September 15, 2011. Leonard was born on February 14, 1930 in Lamar to Leland and Irene (Fleming) McCoy. He graduated from Lamar High School in 1948. Leonard served as a communications chief in the U. S. Army National Guard and the Missouri Reserve Guard from 1950 until his discharge in 1957 having achieved the rank of Sargent. He went on to Pittsburg State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. He worked as a warehouse supervisor and production manager for Pittman Mfg., Allis Chalmers and Coca Cola until retirement in 1992. He loved gardening and restoring vintage Mustangs but his passion was building and flying radio control model planes. He was involved in flying clubs locally and nationally and judged and competed successfully in many national competitions. He was a good neighbor. Leonard married Peggy Loper on December 9, 1974. He and Peggy loved there winter travels to Nevada and Arizona but always returned to Lamar, "God's Country" as Leonard would say, in time to put in a garden. Leonard and Peggy are members of the Lamar First Baptist Church. Leonard is survived by his wife Peggy of the home, a stepdaughter, Diane Bell and husband Rolley of Blue Springs, MO, two granddaughters Stacey Goodfellow and Lindsey Schaaf and husband Brandon and a great granddaughter Kylie Hicks.
