Michial “Mike” Leon Spurling, 68, of Liberal, MO passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, KS, after a lengthy illness. Mike was born on July 27, 1956, in Lamar, MO, to Wilbur and Ethel Spurling. He lived his entire life in the Liberal, MO, area, where he was raised by Wilbur and Velma Spurling.
In 1977, Mike married Teresa Riley in Liberal. Later in life, he met Jennie Harris-Hyatt in 2015, and they pledged their love together in 2017.
Throughout his career, Mike worked at Peerless in Ft. Scott, KS, Liberal Seed Company, McClendon Farms, and Jones Farms, eventually retiring from Murphy’s Farms.
Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time with family. He particularly liked vacationing in Oklahoma with Jennie.
Mike had a knack for creating something out of anything, even designing and building his own camping trailer. He was also known for giving everyone nicknames, a trait that brought joy to those around him.
Mike is survived by his beloved Jennie of the home; his children, Beth (Joe) Bazal, Tony (Jaime) Spurling, Rachel aka Ralph (Ashlee) Spurling, and Amy (Brittany) Spurling; his mother, Velma Spurling; his sister, Cora Ganger; and his sister-in-law, Cindy McMechan. He was also a cherished grandfather to Riley Spurling, Ragan Spurling, Remington Spurling, Quincy Bazal, Kellen Bazal, Natalie Bazal, Izabelle Sprouls, and Ella Spurling, and he was excited to welcome his great-grandchild, Kimber, due in May.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Kim Spurling; his sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Darrell Thompson; Randy and Bobby McMechan; his niece, Lavona Chapman; and Eddie Thompson.
Mike was known for his shy demeanor but also had an ornery side that brought laughter and joy to those who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
