Rita Embry

Rita Lee Embry, 79, Lamar, MO, passed away March 17, 2014, at her daughter's home surrounded by her family, followed by a lengthy illness. Rita, one of five children, was born December 15, 1934, in Colorado Springs, CO, to David (Dump) and Alice (Sewell) Shanklin. She married Perry John Embry, February 2, 1950. Rita was a homemaker, as well as a waitress at the Blue Top Café for several years and was Administrator for the Harry S Truman Birthplace until retirement. Rita was a member of the First Christian Church in Lamar and leaves a legacy of strength, love of family and desire to follow Christ. Rita loved her family and spent most of her time thinking of them, praying for them, and caring for them. Nothing delighted her more than to have one of her family members with her. She loved flowers and gardening and took pride in having one of the best "green thumbs" around. Rita was an active member in the community and enjoyed sharing her life with everyone she met. Each member of her family, and many friends, will always remember her fondly for her "Nannan Noodles". Rita is survived by one son, Luther John Embry, Ft. Scott, KS; one daughter, Barbara Lee Embry, Lamar, MO; a brother, Guy Shanklin, Grand Junction, CO; grandchildren Becky Payne, Lamar, MO; Justin Braker, Newton, KS; Amanda Sheldon, Mexico, MO; Cassie Laemmli, Jefferson City, MO; Dr. Erica Embry-Ballard, Columbia, MO and Alexa Metcalf, Ft. Scott, KS; twelve great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and lifetime friend, Nell Finley-Voorhees. She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Perry Embry in 2012; her parents, two brothers, one sister and one son, Gary Wayne Embry who passed away in 1986.
