Shirley Deay

Shirley Mae Deay, 92, of Lamar, Mo, passed July 29, 2017 at Truman Healthcare in Lamar. She was born at home in rural Platte County, Nebraska, to Leo Peter and Gertrud Wilhelmina (Kuehnel) Mark, October 25, 1924. Shirley graduated from Platte Center High School in 1941. Her first Job was with a bank near her home but soon after she moved to California where she joined the war effort as a "Rosie the Riveter" working for the Lockheed corporation. After the war she worked for the Bank of America. On May 6, 1946, in Columbus, Nebraska, she married Vaughn A. "Shorty" Deay, after he came home from serving in WWII. After moving to Barton County Shirley went to work for the Barton County State Bank where she worked until 1965. She went back to school and earned her degree and licensing in cosmetology. Later she went to work for Finley Engineering where she operated the printing machine that created the engineering blueprints. After retiring from Finley's she remained busy as a caregiver to several in their own homes and a volunteer at the Barton County Senior Citizens Center. She was a 4 H leader in Milford. Always full of energy and ready to be on the go, Shirley enjoyed traveling, dancing, and activities at the senior center where she was a regular bingo caller. At Home she loved gardening and quilting. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and an active member of LWML. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Her husband Shorty, a grandson Derek Candler, and 2 brothers, Jerome and Duane Mark. She is survived by 2 daughters, Lois Wolf, and Lorraine "Rainy" Potter and husband Brad and 1 son, Vern Deay, all of Lamar. She is also survived by 5 grand children; John Candler and wife Tracy, Amy Losh and husband Scott, Kiley Potter, Melissè Segesman and husband Aaron and Loren Wolf, 7 great grandchildren, Morgan, Jordan, Riyker, Marley, Isaac Sebastian and Alexander; and 1 great great grandchild, Damien and Many nieces and nephews and those who became family to her at the Truman healthcare facility. Her funeral will be held at the Grace Lutheran Church Thursday at 10 A.M. There will be a visitation Wednesday at the Church from 6 -8 P.M. Burial will be at the Memory Garden Cemetery.
