He graduated from Hoisington High School in 1965 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Missouri Southern State College in 1970. He married Carla Castle on August 31, 1968 and they later moved to Lamar, MO to raise their family. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
